Marjane Satrapi "sealed [her] act of rebellion against [her] mother's dictatorship by smoking the cigarette [that she had] stolen from [her] uncle. With this first cigarette, [she] kissed childhood goodbye." (Satrapi 117) I was not shock to see this happen because in today's society, teenage smoking has become a serious problem although billions of dollars are spent on anti smoking campaign. The side effects of smoking and nicotine has been taught in schools and homes. The question that arouse me is, despite of knowing their disadvantages why do they still continue smoking? There are tons of reasons why teenagers smoke. Some are like Marjane, he or she wants to be treated like an adult, while other feel that smoking is cool. However, one of the most common reason for teenage to smoke is peer pressure. Teenagers are having a difficult time resisting doing what their friends want or saying no to them. Not only that, a lot of smokers giving each other benefits because they gain companionships, conversations and many other common social contacts. Teenagers enjoy thrilling and dangerous experiences. By smoking, they are able to act on those feeling. Due to the fact that smoking is so forbidden, teenage become more easily allured and tempted by it. Other than these, it is also due to the fact that cigarette can only be purchased by those who have the legal age of eighteen and above. This result many kids and teenagers to have the misperceptions that by smoking are no longer minor, they are adults now.
